Our ancestors walked barefoot on the earth, and they knew something we have forgotten. The ground beneath us is alive. It carries the memory of everyone who ever walked before us. When you stand barefoot on soil, on grass, on sand, something in you settles. The spirit remembers. I make it a practice to walk barefoot whenever I can—in my yard, in the garden, on the path to the river. It is one of the simplest spiritual disciplines I know.
You do not need a forest to do this. Even a small patch of earth, even a moment standing on the ground outside your home, is enough. Close your eyes. Feel the earth holding you. Breathe. Speak to the ground the way you would speak to an elder—with respect and gratitude. Our ancestors understood that the earth is our first mother. When we touch her, we are touching something sacred. Try it today. Let your feet remember what your heart already knows.
