Heartbreak and the Village: Why You Need a Ritual for Letting Go
Western therapy asks you to talk about your pain. The African tradition asks you to act on it. When I experienced a profound loss, talk therapy wasn’t enough. I needed ritual. I performed a cleansing ceremony—not with animal sacrifice, but with a symbolic bonfire in my backyard where I burned old letters. I called in my ancestors not to “fix” me, but to walk with me. Grief isn’t a problem to be solved; it is a spirit to be hosted. Modern African spirituality gives us the tools to host that spirit with dignity, not just medicate it.
