I have been part of so many beautiful ceremonies over the years. I’ve welcomed newborns into the community, wrapping them in white cloth while their mothers wept with joy. I’ve stood beside young people on the day they became adults, proud and nervous and shining. I’ve blessed marriages under the open sky. I’ve honored elders as they entered a new season of wisdom and respect. Each of these moments was different, but the feeling was always the same: that life is a sacred unfolding, and we are lucky to witness it.
What I love most about these ceremonies is the way they bring people together. For a few hours, everyone forgets their disagreements. They sing together. They eat together. They remember that they belong to one another. I always tell the families I work with that these ceremonies aren’t just for the person being honored—they’re for all of us. They remind us why we’re here. They remind us that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves. And when I look out at the faces gathered around, glowing in the firelight, I feel exactly what I’m supposed to feel: grateful. Deeply, quietly, joyfully grateful.
