I’ve always been a sky-watcher. As a child, I would lie outside at night and stare up at the stars until my mother called me in. Back then, I didn’t know I was doing anything spiritual. I just felt small in a good way—the way you feel when you’re standing at the edge of something vast and beautiful. It wasn’t until my elders began teaching me that I realized the sky was speaking all along, and that I had been listening without even knowing it.
The moon is my closest companion in this work. When the new moon arrives, I feel a quiet stirring in my spirit—a sense that something is beginning. I set intentions. I pray. I ask the ancestors to guide the weeks ahead. When the moon grows full, there’s a brightness in my heart that matches the brightness in the sky. That’s when we gather, when we sing, when we celebrate. People sometimes laugh when I tell them I plan ceremonies around the moon, but I just smile. The moon has been guiding us for thousands of years. Why would we stop listening now? The sky is the oldest calendar we have, and it has never once let me down.
