I used to be terrible at silence. Truly awful. I filled every quiet moment with talk, with work, with noise of some kind. Silence made me uncomfortable, like there was something I was avoiding. Then one of my elders told me, gently, “You cannot hear the ancestors if you never stop talking.” That landed hard. I went home, sat down, and forced myself to be quiet for ten minutes. It felt like an hour. But by the end of it, something in me had softened.
Now silence is my favorite part of the day. Every morning, before the world wakes up, I sit in my little room and I just listen. I don’t pray in words. I don’t ask for anything. I simply sit, breathe, and open myself to whatever wants to be felt. Sometimes nothing happens, and that’s fine. Sometimes I feel a presence so warm and familiar that tears come to my eyes. I recommend this practice to everyone who comes to me, no matter what they’re seeking. You don’t need special training. You don’t need a sacred grove. You just need to stop, for a few minutes a day, and let the silence hold you. It will. I promise.
